Top Fire Safety Tips for Your Dealership

This October during “Nation Fire Prevention” month, make sure your dealership has a comprehensive fire-safety plan and emergency plans put into place to protect not only your business assets, but also your staff and customers.

Your emergency plan should include a detailed exit strategy in the event of a fire; and all staff should be familiar with the location of each emergency exit and how to assist nearby customers. Perform regular fire drills and create a procedure to secure the building during a fire so that no one is allowed entry.

Fire safety and prevention also includes regular maintenance and inspections of machinery, electrical panels, smoke detectors, and alarms.

These tips will help prevent fires at your dealership, and ensure you are prepared for emergency situations.

  1. Perform annual fire inspections.
  2. Inspect and test sprinkler systems regularly according to the manufacturers recommendation.
  3. Inspect smoke detectors regularly and replace batteries at least annually.
  4. Report electrical outages and ensure all repair and service is performed by professionals.
  5. Replace fire extinguishers as they expire.
  6. Employees who smoke should only do so in designated areas and properly dispose of cigarettes.
  7. Do not use mechanical/electrical closets for storage.
